Engaging students in using maps and data has been an integral part of STEM pedagogy, but new digital tools for collecting and analyzing data along with access to large repositories of data now provide opportunities for learning activities with data and maps in a variety of fields. In this lunchtime seminar, we will hear first from Bret Maney about his use of CARTO, a web mapping platform, and Word Press in building a digital writing project for American literature students. Next, Dennis Robbins will discuss the AstroCom NYC program at Hunter where students interested in astronomy take research methods courses and seminars in which they learn to analyze data that they collect in real time from probes and sensors that they control. Finally, Linh An, John Pell, and Paul McPherron will present a linguistic landscapes project students complete in ASIAN 210 that uses NYC government data and maps in creating a linguistic profile of New York neighborhoods.
