Designing hybrid and online courses

When: June 4, 2014, 10:00 am - 4:00 pm
Where: Charlotte Frank Classroom (1203 HE)

Presenter(s): ACERT

The Academic Center for Excellence in Research and Teaching (ACERT)is offering a series of “guided exploration” working sessions on designing hybrid and online courses, to be held June 2-5, 2014.  These sessions are intended for faculty who will be teaching online or hybrid courses in the upcoming year. We will explore strategies and tools that will help you organize and design your courses, utilizing a range of technologies to support teaching and learning. Areas that we will cover include:

  • structuring your online or hybrid course
  • designing online materials and activities
  • communicating, collaborating, and working with groups online
  • assessing individual and group assignments

The series consists of sessions on four consecutive days, June 2-5, 2014, 10 am – 4 pm (with an hour break for lunch). Sessions will be co-facilitated by a Hunter School of Education faculty member, Laura Baecher, and our educational technologists, Nancy Guerrero and Shiao-Chuan Kung.  Sessions build on one another, and we therefore ask that you commit to all four days.  We know that it takes more than four days to fully develop an online or hybrid course, and will continue to work with you even after the series ends.

In addition, we are offering a two-day series on teaching with synchronous tools, such as Blackboard Collaborate, on June 9-10.  In this series, we will 6/2/201explore tools and discuss best practices in some common scenarios for which professors might use synchronous tools as part of their classes.

Faculty are welcome to enroll in either or both series.  Faculty who complete both series will receive a certificate of completion from ACERT.

To enroll in either series, please complete this form
no later than May 26.  We will respond with additional information about how to prepare for the first session.  Space is limited and will be offered on a first come, first serve basis, with preference given to faculty scheduled to teach online or hybrid courses.  If you have questions about these series, please email Nancy Guerrero at eguerrer@hunter.cuny.edu.
