Fuzzy Data: Research and Classroom Projects that Code the Humanities

When: October 12, 2017, 12:00 pm - 2:00 pm
Where: Charlotte Frank Classroom (1203 HE)

Presenter(s): Jeff Binder (CUNY Graduate Center), Andrew Demirjian (Film and Media Studies), Ricardo Miranda (Film and Media Studies)

Humanities courses and scholars are typically not known for designing, creating, or using digital tools or programs for conducting research or teaching classes. The assumption is that “humanists don’t code.” Pushing back against this belief, the panel will present innovative research and pedagogical projects that incorporate computer programming and digital tools into the humanities classroom. Jeff Binder will discuss his work with a corpus analysis program that uses historical word usage data from Google books to show students how different dialects and linguistic registers are represented in online archives. Andrew Demirjian will present his use of algorithms and data to create generative poetry in his own work and with his students. Ricardo Miranda will describe his work combining the virtual reality program with documentary material in his creative work and courses.
