January 11 – 14, 2016

Participate in a week-long Guided Exploration on building or refreshing your hybrid and online courses in January. We will work intensively to support you as you create and complete one online learning module for a course you will be teaching in Spring, Summer or Fall 2016!

A learning module is a collection of subject-related teaching materials that is carefully sequenced and chunked.  In addition to course content, modules contain learning outcomes, directions for use, learning activities and ways to ascertain whether students have understood the material. Learning modules are the building blocks of an online course and usually contain one week’s worth of work for students to complete.

In this guided exploration, we will employ an innovative, faculty-friendly format to make it easier for you to both participate and get results. We expect you to produce an online module for a course that you will be teaching while not requiring you to be on campus for the entire four days of the series. We ask you to come on campus on the first and last day (Monday and Thursday) and attend virtual meetings on the second and third day (Tuesday and Wednesday). On Tuesday and Wednesday, we will hear from experienced colleagues in the morning. In the afternoon, you can sign up for individual consultations tailored to your needs. Below is the schedule:

Monday, January 11th 10:00am – 3:00pm (on CAMPUS)

Introduction to CUNY registrar’s modes of instruction codes and sample peer observation form for online courses. See samples of online modules and multimedia assignments. Attend a workshop on learning outcomes led by Hunter’s Director of Assessment, Meredith Reitman.

Tuesday, January 12th and Wednesday, January 13th 10:00am – 3:00pm (ONLINE)

Real-time online presentations in the morning and individualized consultations in the afternoon to work through completion of your online module. Topics may include:

  • preparing students for hybrid/online courses
  • recording mini-lectures
  • creating screen-recordings
  • managing grades
  • facilitating group projects
  • using wikis and blogs
  • conducting synchronous online meetings
  • designing assignments using rich media tools
Thursday, January 14th, 10:00-3:00 (on CAMPUS)

Make final touches and present your module to your colleagues. Gain further insights into improving it prior to launching it!
