Identity and Purpose: Supporting Asian American Students at Hunter College

Approximately one third of Hunter College’s population identifies as Asian American Pacific Islander (AAPI). During this Lunchtime Seminar, staff of the Hunter College AANAPISI Project (HCAP) will discuss issues AAPI college students face and strategies on how best to support them. Professor John Chin, HCAP Principal Investigator, will provide an introduction to the backgrounds of Hunter’s AAPI students and describe possible obstacles our students face during their time here. Dr. Marcia Liu, clinical psychologist and HCAP’s Mental Health Educator, will explore ways for professors and staff to address mental health concerns and provide on/off campus resources.  Dr. Linh An, anthropologist and HCAP’s English Language Learner Specialist, will discuss classroom practices that cultivates inclusivity and collaborative learning. In addition, Kimmi Tsoi and Naheed Hossain will provide student perspectives. All presenters will address the impact of the recent changes to the DACA program that affect many AAPI students. The presentation will provide staff and faculty tangible strategies on supporting AAPI students.
