Multilingual Students in University Classrooms

When: June 21, 2017, 1:00 pm - 3:00 pm
Where: Charlotte Frank Classroom (1203 HE)

Presenter(s): Linh An (Hunter College AANAPISI Project), Paul McPherron (English)

Hunter has some of the most ethnically, culturally, and linguistically diverse students in the country if not the world, but too often multilingual students who are still learning English are viewed as deficient or lacking the ability to succeed in universities. In this Teaching Scholarship Seminar, participants will read about the linguistic and cultural backgrounds of Hunter and CUNY students, discuss particular challenges multilingual students face in our classrooms, and analyze ways faculty can address our multilingual students’ needs. Crucially, readings and discussions will offer examples of how instructors have drawn on the linguistic and cultural backgrounds of their students, in this way moving beyond a deficit view of English learners in our classrooms toward a multilingual approach to university pedagogy.
