Serious play: Games in the classroom

When: March 21, 2017, 12:00 pm - 2:00 pm
Where: Charlotte Frank Classroom (1203 HE)

Presenter(s): Jeff Allred (English), Iris Finkel (Library), Leah Potter (Electric Funstuff), Lauren Spradlin (English)

We often think of play as the opposite of the work that we do in the classroom as teachers or students. This panel will explore pedagogical projects that move against this grain, exploring ways that learning can be playful and play can be pedagogical. Leah Potter will discuss her experiences as a producer of history games, most recently for the K-12 market with Electric Funstuff. Jeff Allred will discuss his transformation of a novella into a role-playing game using the Ivanhoe plugin for WordPress. Iris Finkel will introduce her game based on the early 20th century debates between W.E.B. Du Bois and Booker T. Washington. Lauren Spradlin will explain games she’s devised to teach linguistics concepts.
