Students with disabilities will change your approach to teaching… for the better!

When: October 20, 2015, 12:00 pm - 2:00 pm
Where: Charlotte Frank Classroom (1203 HE)

Presenter(s): Adina Mulliken & John Pell (Social Work and Public Health Library), Sudi Shayesteh (Office of AccessABILITY), Michael Siller (Psychology)

Students with disabilities provide a stark reminder that adult learners enter college with a broad range of learning needs: some students organize information graphically while others create flashcards or highlight their written notes; some students learn through listening and conversations (to themselves or others), while other students have a preference for physical experience – touching, feeling, holding, doing, practical hands-on activities. In this presentation, Hunter faculty and student support staff will share a small number of concrete, easy-to-implement strategies that faculty can use to engage the broadest range of students in learning. The presenters will then facilitate a brainstorming session that explores some of the challenges involved in accommodating the needs of students with disabilities, as well as barriers to implementing a universal design approach to teaching and learning.
