Students produce and publish knowledge: Wikipedia as student writing space

When: April 4, 2017, 12:00 pm - 2:00 pm
Where: Charlotte Frank Classroom (1203 HE)

Presenter(s): Iris Finkel (Hunter Libraries), Charles Tien (Political Science), Megan Wacha (Library Services at CUNY Central)

Do you tell students never to use Wikipedia as a reference in a paper? Have you ever considered using Wikipedia as a learning tool? Charles Tien designed an assignment for his Political Science class where he challenges students to contribute to Wikipedia as editors and writers, writing about historical sites in New York City that have significance in American politics. Iris Finkel, of the Hunter Libraries, will talk about several projects that she collaborated on with Hunter professors in Chemistry, Art History and Africana, Puerto Rican and Latino Studies. Megan Wacha, of the Office of Library Services at CUNY Central, will tell us about related Wikipedia-editing projects and point us to resources so you can start one of your own.
