Assessment without borders: Innovative collaborations between Chemistry and Education

When: February 24, 2015, 12:00 pm - 2:00 pm
Where: Charlotte Frank Classroom (1203 HE)

Presenter(s): Lindsay Portnoy (Educational Foundations) and Mande Holford (Chemistry)

A thought experiment between two professors (Chemistry and Educational Foundations) launched a series of interdepartmental collaborations where students from very different disciplines connected to share their domain-specific knowledge through presentations, discussions and reflection. After courses on assessment (for the teacher candidates) and research design (for the chemistry students), aspiring chemical biologists presented their research goals to groups of teacher candidates in the hopes of clarifying their goals, improving their presentation skills, and honing their focus on research outcomes. Teacher candidates used their assessment skills to provide timely formative assessments to the scientists who were then able to apply this knowledge to their final formal submissions.
