ACERT is pleased to host three CUNY colleagues whose work embodies the spirit of openness in scholarship and teaching. “Open” is a multivalent and emerging concept in scholarship and teaching. Openness, in this sense might point to: authors’ protection of readers’ right to share work via a Creative Commons license; Web 2.0 affordances that invite readers to comment or annotate critical texts; teachers’ creation of free course materials to replace expensive textbooks and thus make education more accessible for economically burdened students. OpenLab will share tools to use for digital annotation, showcase examples of them in action, and discuss best practices for cultivating close reading and conversation in digital spaces.

On February 8th, Lisa Wade will be discussing her book, “AMERICAN HOOKUP: The New Culture of Sex on Campus,” which explores the culture of sex found in many American college campuses today. Lisa argues that today’s hookup culture equates college with freedom, fun, and casual sex. However, there are good, bad, and even ugly sides to this type of campus life.

ACERT will be hosting a workshop on creating open access digital books as part of our May 3 Day of Digital Pedagogy. This hands-on workshop, led by Jack Dougherty (Professor of Educational Studies, Trinity College), will feature the open-source Pressbooks platform, a WordPress derivative that generates books in multiple formats.
