Helping faculty innovate in pedagogy, technology, and assessment
The Academic Center for Excellence in Research and Teaching (ACERT), is the center for teaching and learning at Hunter College. Our work is grounded in a deep commitment to support success across the Hunter community. We foster a culture that values intellectual curiosity, inclusive pedagogy, dialogue across difference, and recognizing the extraordinary work happening every day at Hunter College.
ACERT grew out of a faculty-led effort, begun in 2010, to enhance teaching and learning at Hunter. A small group of Hunter faculty and staff committed to revitalizing Hunter’s Teaching and Learning Center built on early success with pedagogy-focused seminars and collaborations with our partners at ICIT. ACERT was formally established at Hunter in 2012.
Through workshops, seminars, writing groups, conferences, 1:1 consultations, and collaborative programming, ACERT helps faculty to create welcoming learning environments that bolster critical thinking, dialogue across perspectives, and engaged learning in courses and beyond.
Grounded in Hunter College’s mission and our commitment to academic excellence, ACERT encourages teaching and learning practices that promote collaboration, civic engagement, and meaningful connections within classrooms, between the college community and its surroundings, and in the broader public sphere. ACERT offers opportunities to participate at different scales, from casual drop-ins to year-long fellowships. In line with the student-centered and active learning we promote in the classroom, our programming fosters peer-to-peer support and learning and draws on the incredible collective knowledge and expertise of Hunter faculty and staff.
It was a pleasure to share our work and engage with colleagues who are equally committed to advancing innovative teaching and learning practices. I am grateful for ACERT’s efforts in fostering a collaborative community that supports excellence in both teaching and research.
