When: March 8, 2018, 12:00 pm - 2:00 pm
Where: Charlotte Frank Classroom (1203 HE)

Presenter(s): Katherine St John (Computer Science); Nancy Guerrero (Online Learning Center); Manashi Chatterjee (Chemistry); Jill Bargonetti (Biology)

Active learning can be defined in many ways, but the central idea is that students should be doing more than watching, listening and taking notes in our classrooms. In this seminar, presenters will discuss a variety of active learning strategies and activities that work in classrooms with 7 to 700 students. Katherine St John will discuss the ways she has adapted learning activities for Computer Science students from a small classroom to a large lecture. Nancy Guerrero and Manashi Chatterjee will summarize recent studies of guided inquiry learning, personal response devices, and peer instruction strategies that have all shown increases in student engagement. Finally, Jill Bargonetti will illustrate her use of dance and movement in teaching small non-major introductory Cancer Genomics and large lecture Cell and Molecular Biology courses.
