Bringing the Outside World in: Teaching in Turbulent Times

When: April 10, 2025, 10:30 am - 12:00 pm

Presenter(s): Vicki Lens and Michael Lewis (Social Work)

Session dates: Thursday March 13 and April 10
Time: 10:30am-12pm

Description: How do we as educators engage with the outside world when it seeps into our classrooms? When controversial events occurring beyond the academy present teachable moments, in sometimes challenging ways? This ACERT Teaching Scholarship Circle explores what to do during these moments, and how to use them for deeper learning and for teaching intellectual and civic engagement skills. Some examples of what we will explore include the pedagogical advantages and disadvantages of “talking politics” and when it might be necessary to do so, the value of viewpoint diversity, and conceptual models for teaching critical thinking skills.
