University faculty use classroom discussions to accomplish course goals such as engaging students in higher-level thinking and providing students opportunities to examine real-world applications. As instructors, we often know when a discussion has been successful, but do we know what exactly we did? What preparations were necessary before class, and what in-class adjustments did we make? What tools and strategies did we use to ensure all students could actively participate? In this seminar, faculty from various disciplines will discuss what has worked (and what has not) in building effective classroom discussions both in the physical and online classroom.
