When assessing student learning within academic programs, we often have a case of “garbage-in, garbage-out:” even if you assess the learning of students in your program with regard to your stated program learning outcomes (PLOs), you won’t learn anything useful if those PLOs don’t cover the subject matter you really care about. Instead, if PLOs are too vague, too multi-pronged, or deal with either trivia or topics not really valued by your faculty, your assessment will be pointless even if you do everything “right.” In this workshop, the panelists will discuss ways in which we can develop PLOs that will help your department or program gather meaningful information that will help improve your curriculum and pedagogy.
