Paying the Price: College Costs, Financial Aid, and the Betrayal of the American Dream

When: May 7, 2019, 12:00 pm - 2:00 pm
Where: 819 Hunter East

Presenter(s): Mike Benediktsson (Sociology), David Petrain (Classical & Oriental Studies), Sarah Ward (Library), Philip Johnson (Political Science-WAC Fellow)

In preparation for our spring special event with Dr. Sara Goldrick-Rab, please join ACERT for a 3-part Teaching Scholarship Circle (TSC) where we will read and discuss selections from Goldrick-Rab’s book Paying the Price: College Costs, Financial Aid, and the Betrayal of the American Dream. In her work, Goldrick-Rab argues that one of the most sustained and vigorous public debates today is about the value—and, crucially, the price—of college. Through our reading and discussion of her work, we will analyze her transformational vision for higher education in America, and draw lessons for how we support students at Hunter and address issues such as homelessness and food insecurity in our work as teachers and administrators.

The TSC will meet from 12-2pm in HE 819 on the following Tuesdays: April 16th, April 30th, and May 7th. Participants will receive a copy of the book from which we will pick different chapters to read each week. Participants should plan to attend all 3 sessions, if possible. Lunch and coffee will be provided.

Please feel free to reach out with questions or thoughts and to RSVP to acert@hunter.cuny.edu.
