Apply by April 8, 2106.

Day of Digped logo squareWriting Across the Curriculum, ACERT, and the coordinators of English 120 (“English Composition”) have created a new prize for the best examples of “digital writing” from a recent course at Hunter. We would like to thank the Provost’s office for its generous financial support for this initiative.

By digital writing, we mean writing that is:

  • composed on digital platforms other than traditional word processing, for example, wikis, blogging platforms, slidestacks (or other presentation software).
  • published online in some way, accessible by real audiences, be they the entire world via the open web or one’s peers in the classroom via a restricted site, and (often) open to interaction on the part of the audience by way of comments, annotations, or other dynamic features.
  • “multimodal”: that is, it combines text with other media, from photographs to video to sound files to GIFs or other animations.
  • academically rigorous and discipline-specific even as it experiments with new forms.

Submissions will be judged by a panel of faculty and staff with expertise in digital pedagogy using the following criteria:

  • creativity: degree to which project innovates and expands one’s sense of the uses and scope of critical writing.
  • rigor: sophistication of the intellectual project, care with which the prose and media objects are woven together into a coherent whole, use of academic traditions and methods in thinking through the problem at hand.
  • design: user-friendliness of the project, tight fit between medium and message, appropriate choice of platform or technology to the project

Cash prizes of $250, $100, and $50 will be awarded to the winners at a ceremony on May 3rd, 2016 as part of Hunter’s Day of Digital Pedagogy event.

We will accept entries from current Hunter students in any course in any department from the last four semesters (i.e., from Fall, 2014 to the present). Applications are due via this form on Friday, April 8th, and winners will be notified in late April. Please direct any questions to Ky Woltering.
