Special Events In this ACERT / Sociology Department Special Event, Dr. Sara Goldrick-Rab will present her innovative and critical work on the role of higher education in the United States. Professor Goldrick-Rab will argue that one of the most sustained and vigorous public debates today is about the value—and, crucially, the price—of college. In this talk, Dr. Goldrick-Rab will communicate a transformational vision for higher education in America that stresses affordability and access for all, especially lower- to middle-income students and first generation college students. She will give the audience a better understanding of the complexity and the urgency of the situation and inspire us with a sense of a need for action. [Details...]

Inclusive Classroom: Tools, Rights and Freedom
Presenter(s): Joseph Viteritti (Urban Policy and Planning), Vicki Lens (Social Work), Robyn Brown-Manning (Social Work)

There is a growing debate among those in and outside the academy over whether the principles of free expression are at risk by practices such as trigger warning and safe spaces. A recently signed Executive Order directs the Department of Education and other government agencies to withhold funds from colleges that limit or restrict free expression. This panel will discuss the inclusive classroom and whether the use of tools like trigger warnings and safe spaces help preserve free expression and the rights of students and faculty in the classroom. Knowledge Without Walls: The ethos of openness in research and teaching
Presenter(s): Shelly Eversley (English & Women’s Studies, Baruch College), Matthew K. Gold (English & Digital Humanities, CUNY GC), Michael Smith (Communications Technology, York College)

ACERT is pleased to host three CUNY colleagues whose work embodies the spirit of openness in scholarship and teaching. “Open” is a multivalent and emerging concept in scholarship and teaching. Openness, in this sense might point to: authors’ protection of readers’ right to share work via a Creative Commons license; Web 2.0 affordances that invite readers to comment or annotate critical texts; teachers’ creation of free course materials to replace expensive textbooks and thus make education more accessible for economically burdened students.
