Whether they emerge in response to a national event or form the basis for class content, university instructors and staff may feel that discussions of race, gender, sexuality, and class are “difficult subjects” to address in their classrooms. Addressing these hot-button topics head on with a wide range of authors, Professors Badia Ahad-Legardy and OiYan Poon have compiled reflections and practical guidance from instructors and staff in diverse fields from criminal justice to organic chemistry to gender studies in their edited volume Difficult Subjects: Insights and Strategies for Teaching about Race, Sexuality and Gender.
This January, please join ACERT for a 4-part, weekly Teaching Scholarship Circle (TSC) where we will read and discuss selections from Ahad-Legardy and Poon’s book and consider how race, gender, sexuality, and class intersect in our classrooms and work at Hunter.
We hope this TSC will build on the ideas from past January TSCs at ACERT that investigated critical race theory, faculty diversity, and race in the college classroom. Our goal in this continued discussion is to foster cross-discipline (and cross-campus) collaboration and activist pedagogy that critically engages these issues with students.
The TSC will meet on Wednesdays in January, from 2-3:30 pm in the Charlotte Frank Room (HE 1203). Participants will receive a copy of the book from which we will pick different chapters to read each week. Participants should plan to attend all 4 sessions: Jan. 2nd, Jan. 9th, Jan. 16th, and Jan. 23rd. Snacks and coffee will be provided!
