Students often approach research assignments in ways that conflict with the professor’s intentions. Join us as we consider a few simple adjustments that might make research assignments more meaningful to both students and professors. In this research assignment makeover, faculty will hear approaches based on work in the fields of composition and information literacy. Wendy Hayden, Co-Director of the English 120 program, will make the case that research papers are still relevant for our students—and even vital to their learning—and will explain how English 120 is changing its approach to the research paper. Then, Sarah Ward and Gardner Treneman of the Hunter College Libraries and Dennis Paoli of the Reading/Writing Center will respond with some of the most common points of confusion for students at different stages of the research process, and offer simple and constructive recommendations for addressing these issues in research assignments. Faculty should come prepared to discuss their own research assignments and the role these assignments play in their course.
