Developing and Improving Meaningful Program Learning Outcomes
Presenter(s): Joel Bloom (Director of Assessment), Rob Cowan (Arts and Sciences), Kenneth Mclaughlin(Economics), and Jason Young (Psychology)

When assessing student learning within academic programs, we often have a case of “garbage-in, garbage-out:” even if you assess the learning of students in your program with regard to your stated program learning outcomes (PLOs), you won’t learn anything useful if those PLOs don’t cover the subject matter you really care about. Instead, if PLOs are too vague, too multi-pronged, or deal with either trivia or topics not really valued by your faculty, your assessment will be pointless even if you do everything “right.” In this workshop, the panelists will discuss ways in which we can develop PLOs that will help your department or program gather meaningful information that will help improve your curriculum and pedagogy [Details...]

Values-Based Assessment
Presenter(s): Joel Bloom (Director of Assessment)

With increasing demands on assessment for compliance, assessment professionals have often focused either on either quality issues of validity and reliability, or quantity issues – producing a report for our evidence inventory. Joel Bloom tries to move toward developing assessment models that prioritize substantive importance over either statistical validity or external compliance. It's so easy for assessment practitioners to get bogged down in compliance and data issues -- which programs submitted reports, and whether they did them "right" -- that we often lose sight of why we are here. This impacts our morale and makes it harder to make the case for why anyone should be doing the assessment. [Details...]

Learning and Assessment in Administrative and Educational Support Units (Encore)
Presenter(s): Joel Bloom (Assessment), Brian Buckwald (Student Affairs)

Units outside of academic programs are increasingly called upon to assess their practices, with added specific emphasis on those units who support and further student learning and development outcomes.  In this workshop the presenters will help attendees recognize what and where student learning occurs in such units and recommended resources to help support an evidence-based approach and reaccreditation efforts.  The workshop is open to all interested but particularly directed at staff in administrative and educational support units. Assessment Breakfasts While academic departments and programs at Hunter College have been conducting assessment of student learning outcomes (SLOs) in their undergraduate programs for some time, assessment of learning outcomes within our graduate programs is far less widespread as well as less developed. The co-presenters will begin with some background on assessment of student learning, and will discuss similarities and differences between SLOs – and SLO assessment – between graduate and undergraduate programs. The workshop will include an interactive activity in which participants work together to review their current graduate outcomes and assessment plans or activities, and help identify ways in which they can be enhanced or improved. The workshop is open to all interested but particularly directed at assessment coordinators, chairs, and faculty in departments with graduate programs. [Details...]
