There is a growing debate among those in and outside the academy over whether the principles of free expression are at risk by practices such as trigger warning and safe spaces. A recently signed Executive Order directs the Department of Education and other government agencies to withhold funds from colleges that limit or restrict free expression. This panel will discuss the inclusive classroom and whether the use of tools like trigger warnings and safe spaces help preserve free expression and the rights of students and faculty in the classroom.

JOSEPH P. VITERITTI

Joseph P. Viteritti is the Thomas Hunter Professor of Public Policy and Chair of the Urban Policy and Planning Department at Hunter. He was the founding chair of the Public Policy Program at Hunter’s Roosevelt House Public Policy Institute, and is a member of the doctoral faculty in education policy at the CUNY Graduate Center.

VICKI LENS

Dr. Vicki Lens joined the Silberman School of Social Work faculty in Fall 2016 as a Professor. Dr. Lens came to Silberman from the Columbia University School of Social Work, where she taught for many years. She received her Ph.D. in social welfare from Yeshiva University’s Wurzweiler School of Social Work and her MSW from Stony Brook University (SUNY). Professor Lens has also trained and worked as a lawyer, with her JD from New York Law School.

ROBYN BROWN-MANNING

Dr. Robyn Brown-Manning became a full-time Visiting Lecturer on the Silberman School of Social Work faculty in Fall 2016. She entered this role with a remarkable record of service to Silberman, having been an adjunct lecturer at the school for over fifteen years as well as earning both her MSW and Ph.D. degrees here.

JOHN ROSE (Moderator)

John Rose is Dean for Diversity & Compliance at Hunter College, working to promote recruitment of individuals from underrepresented groups as faculty, senior administrators and staff. He also works closely with student groups to address diversity issues on campus, and oversees investigations of complaints alleging discrimination.
